been an important opportunity for us to really put some considered thought into the proposal. what you have in front of you is better than airplane reading. there are some suggestions in this energy 2020 document that people will look at and they will argue and they will say -- that is one person's view. that is true, that is true. but while we are trying to do is not give you a legislative package starting with initiatives that we are going to kind of clicked off as we move forward. this is really designed to be a discussion blueprint. we want to try to change the conversation. one of the reasons we have to think about changing the conversation is because the energy paradigm has really shifted. think about where we were one decade ago. it was all about scarcity, shortages, and how much dependent we were on foreign sources for our oil. fast forward to where we are today. those once thought of import terminals are looking to the export terminals. we have made considerable gains in terms of our own energy independence, to the point where it is no longer just a slogan that we are talking

, everyone. i'm randi kaye, glad you're with us. we begin this morning with news about the shooting death of a former nav former naval s.e.a.l. chris kyle was killed yesterday along with another person at a gun range near ft. worth, texas. local newspapers also confirm the death. wfaa reports a former marine suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder is being held in connection with the shootings. these are pictures of kyle taken from the security company kraft international. kyle recounted his four combat tours in iraq in his book "american sniper." his more than 150 sniper kills had them placing a bounty on his head. most recently he appeared on the reality show "stars earn stripes" and conan o'brien show. >> you were so well known by the iraqi insurgents that they put a $20,000 bounty on your head, is that right? >> yes, sir. >> how did the iraqi insurgents identify who you were? >> when i'd go into a house and we had occupied houses, i would take the top of my uniform off and just have my short sleeve shirt on and youed and see my tattoo coming down my arm and they identified that w

pitts tells us how a killer once committed to a mental hospital got a permit by-to-buy 15 guns. captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. >> pelley: good evening. the f.b.i. has stormed an underground shelter today, shooting to death a kidnapper and freeing a five-year-old boy unharmed. the boy, whose first name is ethan, had been held for seven days outside midland city, alabama. the family allowed us to show you his picture. the police say that ethan was kidnapped last tuesday from a school bus by 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes who neighbors have described as belligerent. mark strassmann is on the scene with the breaking news tonight. mark? >> reporter: scott, here's what happened in the final minute. two muffled bangs could be heard behind me in the direction of the shelter. an ambulance that had been parked nearby since the start of the standoff raced up the hill. about a minute later, local deputies and f.b.i. agents were patting themselves on the back, then ambulance came back down the hill, this time driving slowly, carrying ethan to a lo

. molly line has been following the story for us. american hero known as the u.s. military's most lethal sniper and another man both killed at the rough creek lodge roughly 50 miles southwest of fort worth texas, yesterday. texas authorities believe eddie ray ruth of lancaster shot kyle and his close friend chad little field shortly after 3:00 in the afternoon fleeing the lodge area in kyle's stolen pickup truck. he was a dedicated corporal in the marines who had been deployed in iraq in 2007 and served in haiti in 2010. currently listed on reserve duty. a motive for the shooting remains unclear. but ruth apparently suffered from ptsd. according to friends, kyle may have taken him to the range in an effort to help him cope and ruth turned on the two men, shooting them at close range. after the murders, texas authorities say ruth drove to his sister's house and told her and her husband what happened at the gun range. they called law enforcement who went to ruth's home to make an arrest. ruth fled but caught after a short pursuit and automatic handgun recovered at his home. >> harris: kyle

morning. you know, the officials here are telling us they decided to move in that fbi hostage rescue team after the negotiations started deteriorating with that kidnapper. so they basically got that team ready and made a major distraction. what they did was throw in some flash bang devices. those give off a really blinding, bright light and a disorienting loud noise. fbi agents shook hands and patted each others' backs shortly after storming an underground bunker to save the 5-year-old held hostage for seven days. the boy named ethan has been reunited with his family at a local hospital and is said to be doing well. >> he's laughing, joking, playing, eating. the things that you would expect a normal 5 to 6-year-old young man to do. >> reporter: the suspect, 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes, is dead. officials say they made the decision to raid the bunker after dykes began pacing and holding his gun. >> at this point, fbi agents fearing the child was in imminent danger entered the bunker and rescued the child. >> reporter: the news that ethan is safe and unharmed came as a relief to the communi

't think it hurts him or really helps him that much either way. it gives us something to talk about. but i think the issue is larger than this photo. it's really about the substantive proposals on the table. i think the president is smart if he doesn't push too hard on the assault weapons ban itself. there isn't much support for that in congress. but what there is support for is universal background checks and perhaps cracking down on some of these traffickers who freely move guns from states like north carolina to states like new york, where they have big cities and tougher gun laws. >> you know, ruth, when it comes to legislation it seems like other than the nra, there is some agreement on universal background checks. harry reid saying he supported it and a quinnipiac poll showing near 100% support for it in virginia as you look at the numbers right there. also new jersey and pennsylvania, a lot of support. is this where lawmakers can find some common ground right now? >> absolutely. i was at a breakfast with nra president last week sponsored by the christian science monitor and i asked
